In the late 1970s, in the design-forward Neustadt district of Dresden, German industrial designer Matthias Richter began exploring how engineering precision could coexist with modern comfort. He worked in a converted warehouse near the Elbe River, where clean architectural lines and Bauhaus influences shaped his disciplined approach to proportion and materials.

His goal was to create a modular sofa built with the rigor of German engineering — a frame constructed with near-industrial accuracy — yet softened by upholstery that offered an inviting, contemporary ease. Each module functioned as a structural unit: grounded, balanced, and designed to connect with exacting stability.

The result was a system defined by clarity and purpose — integrated wood detailing, wide sculpted cushions, and a silhouette that balanced structural confidence with understated luxury. Early prototypes were admired for their durability as much as their form, engineered to perform beautifully over decades of use.

When Rove rediscovered Matthias's unpublished studies, the design was reinterpreted as the Dresden Modular Sectional — a piece that carries the unmistakable influence of German craft. Its architectural geometry, precision-built frame, and refined comfort honor the engineering heritage that inspired it.
